Karli Coetzee is Lead SA’s youth hero

RUIMSIG – Karli Coetzee from Maragon Private Schools was chosen as the winner of the Youth Leader for the Year 2015 for Gauteng.

Maragon Private Schools‘ head girl, Karli Coetzee, was chosen by Lead SA as the winner of the Youth Leader for the Year for Gauteng. Karli was invited along with the 12 heroes of each month to the Primedia offices in Sandton recently were she emerged victoriously.

The 17-year-old was awarded for her Heavenly Hands initiative which helped raise funds for building a hall which is used as a soup kitchen for the elderly at Mug and Tree Community Care in Krugersdorp. The hall is also used as a day-care facility during the day. She started serving the community when she was only 15 years old. During the event, Karli was awarded a certificate and a hand-painted life-size painting of the late Nelson Mandela and also received R12 000 for her charity.

Karli has been invited to attend a function on 15 August at the University of Johannesburg where an overall winner will be announced nationally. The winner will then receive R100 000 for their charity. The competition has been running for a year, and every month, the Lead SA Campaign selects a winner out of thousands of entries and then chooses a winner for that specific month.

According to Karli, she is grateful to have been able to assist her charity. She, however, sees this as something that any South African citizen should be doing.

“I am grateful that through the publicity Mug and Tree can receive all the exposure and therefore the community can become more aware of the plight of these children and their situation,” she said. Maragon has also decided to support Mug and Tree after Karli took it upon herself to collect donations for them – and on 7 August the school went to the community care to donate McDonald’s meals. “We were received by excited little people that could not wait to enjoy their Happy Meals,” said marketing manager for the Maragon Group, Belinda Espag.

She added, “This year, Maragon wants to also move our annual Christmas Party that we have for different charities to Mug and Tree and the event is going to take place on 21 November at Mug and Tree – we would appreciate any support or suggestions.”
