Battle of the Bands enters its 19th year at Rumours
WELTEVREDEN PARK – The Battle of the Bands starts on 16 August.
The whole purpose of the Battle of the Bands at Rumours Lounge in Weltevreden Park is to provide a platform for up and coming bands and artists. Simon Foulds of Rumours Lounge insisted, “What’s important to note about the competition is that we’re not necessarily looking for the newest sounds; each band is judged on their performance on the day. The genre of music is irrelevant – a rock band can go up against a metal band and still be judged on their own merit.” The 19th edition of the competition starts on 16 August, with the final on 6 December.
He added that 20 per cent of the band’s score would be for marketing, explaining, “Bands need to know how to market themselves. Merely posting on Facebook isn’t marketing. We’re going to look at the crowd that comes to support them. Is it just their mothers and girlfriends or have they made the effort to bring in a mix of people?” Following that, bands will also be critiqued on how they interact with the crowd.
Foulds has confirmed an exciting line-up of prizes:
- Marshall Music Roodepoort sponsors R30 000 worth of prizes for the bands and an acoustic guitar for the acoustic competition. Every band and / or acoustic artist who enters, qualifies for a discount when purchasing musical equipment from them.
- Rumours Lounge sponsors a cash prize and the opportunity of opening for some big named SA bands during the course of next year.
- Man Cave Studios offer a four-track EP recording plus bands and acoustic artists who enter the competition, get discount when recording at the studio
- Alex Wolf will do a professional photo shoot of the winning band
- Squire’s Publicity will do a publicity campaign for the band
- The winning band will also have the opportunity of headlining the Squire’s Birthbash in April 2016, headline the Winter Wonderland Music Festival and, if they are a metal band, the Metal Christmas in July 2016.
