City to City Marathon returns

Get ready for the ultimate run.

From Roodepoort Athletics Club’s Maylah Pieterse and Jan Kemp to Golden Reef Running Club’s Peder Firman and Jannie Lewies, local athletes have a rich history when it comes to participating in the City to City Ultra Marathon.

So when the competition was cancelled in 2013 due to the main sponsor pulling out, many athletes were disappointed.

However, Central Gauteng Athletics have partnered with Athletics Gauteng North to bring back the popular event.

The two organisations, along with City of Joburg and City of Tshwane will host the 41st edition of the race.

It will take place from Pretoria on 27 September to Johannesburg.

“Partners engaged and agreed that the race must take place this year, whether or not it has a main sponsor. Working towards maintaining the standards of this prominent race, stakeholders involved have ensured they be hands-on in the planning of the event to make sure all technical aspects are in order. The whole objective is to keep the spirit of the race intact for all who have participated in it and those who will participate for the first time,” said Central Gauteng Athletics Mbalenhle Ngema.

The 50 kilometre race will start at the Gautrain station, Centurion heading to James and Ethel Grey Park, Melrose.

The other two race distances, 21km and 10km, will start and finish at James and Ethel Grey Park on the day.
