Firefighters back to work

Court orders firemen back.

Residents can feel safe again knowing the striking firefighters are back on duty – for now.

The firefighters were expected back at work this morning working 12 hour shifts as opposed to the 8am until 4pm shifts they have been working the past week. This was done out of protest against the fact that they are not receiving overtime pay. The Labour Court has granted the City of Johannesburg’s application for a temporary order to force the firemen to return to work.

This is not the dispute’s swan song though. The firefighters’ representative Dan Motsoeneng said they will respect the court order but has vowed to continue the fight.

“That is the law and we will uphold and respect it. But this does not mean any party has emerged victorious,” said Motsoeneng.
