Primary school pupils author children’s book

This year, these children have written a book for MSA to share.

Last year, Monash South Africa (MSA) donated thousands of books to children in nearby communities as part of their Mandela Month activities.

The university collaborated with Ducere Foundation, a publisher of children’s books to curate and print the collection of stories written by pupils from Zandspruit Primary School.

The 10 young authors had the opportunity to present their book and read a passage for guests invited to the MSA launch including officials from the Gauteng Education Department.

“The need for intellectual development and stimulation while inspiring critical thinking remains a pressing issue, particularly within the South African context. Too many of our young people are not receiving the tools to give them the education they deserve. By providing reading materials, and nurturing a love of books and stories in our children, we take a step closer towards ensuring their academic success later on in life,” said Craig Rowe Director; Engagement at MSA.

The young authors of the stories are part of the This is Me community service programme, managed by MSA second year student, Sahl Karim. MSA students lend support to schools in the surrounding area of Zandspruit, by teaching learners literacy skills while mentoring the students and encouraging a love of learning.

“I have been coordinating the programme for the past two years with my amazing group of volunteers. We travel to two schools in Zandspruit twice a week during the semester to spend time with these inspirational pupils,” he said.
