When watching a Jeff Dunham show, do you sometimes wonder how he makes his puppets ‘talk?’
Understanding how ventriloquism works might be tricky, especially when you try saying ‘I am a ventriloquist’ without moving your mouth.
In order to celebrate National Ventriloquism Week which is from 15 to 18 July, try doing the exercise.
Ventriloquism started as a form of entertainment in the 18th century.
Since then, the art of ventriloquism became popular and many people tried it.
Here are some facts you may not have known:
1. When ventriloquism started, ventriloquists did not use dummies. During performances, they would pretend a voice was coming from an attic or in a cellar
2. Professional ventriloquist dummies are made by hand
3. In 1770, a man by the name of Baron von Mengen came up with the idea of using a doll with a moving mouth
4. In the 1930s, the wife of a ventriloquist sued him for divorce because he apparently used to insult her while on stage
