Senior citizen hit with higher electricity bill

WELTEVREDEN PARK – A senior Weltevreden Park resident says she has been hit by high electricity bills.

Do you understand your municipal electricity bills?

Senior residents at Willow Tree Retirement Village in Weltevreden Park, say they have been hampered with electricity billing that they claim is not fair.

Denyce Tyson, who has been living at the retirement village for a year now, said her electricity bill is a bit much to swallow.

“My electricity is always going up, I know that the municipality was supposed to increase rates in July, but we have been getting increases every month.

Her efforts to get answers from the complex management were unsuccessful.

“I have emailed them, and tried calling but no one is getting back to me,” Tyson said.

Her neighbour is also complaining about her bill. We are senior citizens and we deserve to get the best treatment,” she said.

She also added that she hardly uses her electricity.

“I use a gas stove, I leave my home at 5am in the morning and come back late, my lights are always off because I prefer sitting in the dark to save more electricity,” she said.

However, according to managing agent for the retirement village Hannes Wessels, there is nothing wrong with Tyson’s accounts.

“Ms Tyson’s metre was faulty in June, however we fixed it and the July bill is correct,” Wessels said.

City Power was contacted but they are yet to comment on this issue.
