GALLERY: Joburg Ballet preps for gala performance

FLORIDA PARK – The Joburg Ballet finish off with their final dress rehearsal before the highlights performance at the Roodepoort Theatre.

The Joburg Ballet performed the final dress rehearsal for their upcoming [Joburg Ballet Highlights Gala that takes place on 10 July at the Roodepoort Theatre.

The gala event is set to showcase the talents of the Joburg Ballet Company. An impressive line-up of SA’s leading ballet stars come to Roodepoort Theatre on 10 and 11 July for three performances. The programme showcases ballet styles ranging from pure 19th century classical works through to 21st century contemporary South African choreography.

Prima ballerina Burnise Silvius described the gala event as a wonderful opportunity “to see all the dancers in the whole company do solos and pas de deux. There are not many opportunities where that is the case,” she said.

Silvius revealed that she never danced at the Roodepoort Theatre before. “I am looking forward to a good environment to dance and to bring ballet to a different audience,” she said.

Senior soloist Ramiro Samón will also be dancing the Don Quixote pas de deux variations and coda.

The production includes a new original contemporary piece, choreographed by Joburg Ballet dancer John Tsunke. The piece is entitled Fearless and is set to Frank Wildhorn’s song Finding Wonderland from the broadway musical Wonderland.

Tsunke is excited about introducing his ideas to people who have never seen it before. “Working with Joburg Ballet on this piece means that I am able to visit new stages, and to have my piece performed alongside other strong works that have been danced many times before. I feel very privileged to be involved in this way, ” he said.

The gala will run for one hour and is performed without interval, making it an ideal outing for the family at attractive ticket prices and in an easily accessible venue.
