‘Speedo Gonzales’ ready for charity cycling dare

The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation’s (MDFSA’s) Braam Roux is ready to cycle in a speedo in order to raise funds.

On Saturday 18 July starting at 8am, Roux will race in his speedo from The Country Bomo in Muldersdrift to Clearwater Mall. He was dared by MDFSA general manager Pieter Joubert to race in a speedo. The race is a fundraiser in aid of patient Tiaan van Staden, 9, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The Record previously reported Tiaan has reached a stage where he is unable to walk and needs a customized, motorized wheelchair to give him his independence.

DMD is a progressive neuromuscular disorder causing muscle wasting and weakness.

“We have a waiting list of people in need of specialized equipment and without the goodness of individuals and companies will not be able to assist those affected by this dreadful disease,” Joubert, a muscular dystrophy sufferer himself, told the Record.

“We are grateful for any support and would like to appeal to the community to support our cause.”

Joubert asked that residents who see Roux racing support him along the way, hooting or making a noise to support the cause.

“Please let us know if you would like to dare anybody to support us, or if you can do something extraordinary.

“We will share the dare and photos on our facebook page and website.”

Joubert also appeals to cyclists to ride for a purpose this November by joining the MDFSA cycling group, the Muscle Riders, in completing the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge on 15 November. Entries close on 31 August.
