Canoeists honoured at awards

He was given the awards at the Gauteng Canoe Union’s annual prize giving ceremony last week.

Shaun Maphanga was named the Gauteng River K2 Champion in the Sub Veteran age category which he completed with Serge van Hee, as well as the Mixed Doubles Champion with Monique Steven.

Maphanga is a Florida Lake Canoe Club member and he lives there as a grounds and club manager.

He is widely regarded as one of the top canoeist in the West Rand and the club’s history after earning a silver medal at this year’s Dusi Marathon.

During the night, paddlers were recognised for a variety of achievements including Gauteng, national and federation colours for specifically identified international or interprovincial championship events in surfski, river racing, canoe polo, sprints and marathons.

Discovery’s Dugan Afonso and Weltevreden Park’s David Rodrigues were awarded national colours for their participation in the World Canoe Polo Championships in France last year.
