Fill your tanks by Tuesday midnight

Motorists will have to tighten their belts once more as South Africa is hit by a second fuel price hike in four weeks.

The Department of Energy has announced another fuel price hike, effective 1 July 2015.

South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors. According to a statement released by the Department, July’s increase is due to the weakening of the rand against the US dollar. The rand lost around 40 cents against the US dollar since the end of May as a result of negative sentiment on emerging markets globally.

International prices for petrol increased, due to strong demand (summer ‘driving’ season) in Europe, and pre-Ramadan buying in the Asian market.

The statement indicated that fuel prices for July 2015 in the South African market will be adjusted as follows:

1. Both grades of diesel will increase by 4.0 cents/ litre.

2. Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will increase by 8.0 cents/litre.

3. Illuminating paraffin (wholesale) will increase by 6.0 cents/litre.

4. Petrol (93 ULP and LRP) will increase by 44.0 cents/litre.

5. Petrol (95 ULP and LRP) will increase by 41.0 cents/litre.

6. Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will increase by 56.0 cents/kilogram.

Department of Energy fuel-saving tips:

1. Fill your tank in the morning.

2. Fill up when your tank is at the half mark rather than the quarter mark.

3. Check your tyre pressure is correct.

4. It is more economical to use aircon than driving with open windows.

5. Get to know the timing of your local traffic lights.
