Sorted Magazine, a Christian Youth magazine hosted a Youth Day initiative at the West Rand Lutheran Community Church last weekend.
Youth from Soweto, Alex and Kagiso joined in the festivities to honour the 1976 marches.
The event was attended by South African Police Services provincial officers such as Lieutenant-Colonel Jaco Roux, Major Julia Claassen and Roodepoort Police Station’s Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo.
They spoke to the youth about their careers as part of the career planning and development workshops.
The workshop was followed by a Mad About session, where youth leaders inspired young people to become social agents of change in their community and school.
Later in the day, a generation’s panel discussion took place where some of the survivors of the Hune 16 marches such as Nokuzola Sithole, Sechaba Khumalo and Enos Ngutshane spoke about their experiences during the uprisings.
The church’s youth and Sortd magazine editor Sihle Maseko said the initiative discusses current issues that affect today’s society.
“We want to empower the youth to form holistic opinions about our society and not just go on hearsay. This is where they also learn how to manage projects so they can go out into their communities and do something positive. We challenge and train the youth so they can grow into socially involved adults,” he said.
