Great speaking is imminent

He chose the topic of xenophobia, referencing xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2008 and 2015 and calling it a misplaced term.

Powerful statements were made and presentation skills shown off at the Bacon & Egg Toastmasters Club this past weekend (Saturday 20 June).

“Sometimes, ladies and gentlemen, you have to speak the truth no matter how uncomfortable or politically risky it may be,” the second speaker of the morning, Khetha Cele, during his speech said.

He was expected to do a keynote address from the Professional Speaker manual, where he had to establish emotional rapport with his audience, use a speech style and delivery that effectively inspired and moved his audience to adopt his views. “I want us to question this lable we have attached to ourselves – is it perhaps Afrophobia rather than xenophobia?”

The first and third speakers Seru Lekomanyane and Shaun Goodbrand delivered equally powerful speeches. Seru, who is busy completing her competent communication (novice) manual, had to ‘get to the point’ with her speech on workplace bullying and an anti-bully organisation called See It and Say It. She discussed causes of bullying, signs thereof and how it should be dealt with.

Finally, Shaun surprised his audience with a technical presentation speech they could understand, with the topic ‘Creating a flat earth’. It is his fourth task in the Technical Presentation manual and, referencing different methods by which the earth was mapped over the past century he posed the question, which is the best way? He referenced a Czech paper on the topic by Richard Cook. He spoke of the Mercator, Robinson, Gall-Peters and Van der Grinten Projections to name a few. His presentation was so well-prepared and easily understandable that Shaun earned the Best Speech trophy.

Justine Lacy and Jack Hartmann shared the Best Evaluator trophy for their evaluations of Seru and Khetha’s speeches. Glen Campbell was awarded the Best Impromptu Speech trophy for her answer to the question, ‘What advice will you give a high school pupil?’

The club will next meet at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre on Saturday 4 July at 8.20am. For more information contact Glen Campbell on 082 465 0462.
