Elderly’s wall destroyed in “hit and run”
The male driver and his female passenger have not yet been identified.
A double dose of bad luck hit residents of Witpoortjie Senior Park when a bakkie crashed through the boundary wall, necessitating fixing in the dark.
At around 5.30pm on Wednesday night 17 June an unidentified man driving a silver bakkie and his female passenger crashed through the boundary wall on Reyger Street, reversed the bakkie out, picked a few of its broken-off parts up and drove off. Where the bakkie hit the wall was directly behind an elderly woman’s flat in the park, creating a gap in the wall of about four metres. The Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) patrollers were alerted via radio.
“The block watch have been great,” Anne Jason, Senior Park manager told the Record on scene, adding that “a resident was kind enough to donate barbed wire and the patrollers were kind enough to go pick up the barbed wire at their home and bring and help install it.”
Staff members Diane Venter and Louw Smit assisted resident Brian Petty and WSRNW patroller JP Labuschagne to construct a makeshift boundary wall just as the neighbourhood’s lights went out for load shedding.
They made use of vehicles’ headlights to complete the operation. WSRNW’s operation room also organised for one of the patrollers to guard the Senior Park throughout the night.
Jason said Senior Park had already organised for a contractor to visit the premises this morning (18 June) and fix the damages.
“We view this as an urgent matter since it threatens the safety of our residents,” she said.
