REVIEW: Jurassic World welcomes audiences back to the park

JOBURG – 'Jurrasic World' aims to have audiences hanging off the edge of their seats.

GENRE: Sci-fi, action, adventure.

RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes.

STARRING: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson.

DIRECTED BY: Colin Trevorrow

RATING: 8/10

PLOT: Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus Rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinosaurs to run amok. Now, it is up to a former military man and animal expert Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault.

THE GOOD: Jurassic World offers a few suspenseful moments of its own, the film’s reliance on computer-generated dinosaurs means that the director can throw the whole spectacle at the audience, making for a much more intense experience. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard provide fresh and innovative performances. Fans will be delighted at the number of surprises and homages to the original, while still being introduced to a range of new dinosaurs and locations on the island.

THE BAD: A few missteps that this movie suffers from involves the use of bad and incomplete cinema science (oversimplification of real-world science), which does not always make logical sense at times. The other drawback involves a romantic subplot between the protagonists that seems a bit rushed. Another gripe that audiences might have is that no reasoning was able to justify how the park received enough funding to rebuild after the disastrous events of 1992, or why tourists would decide to visit such a place, knowing the history of what happened the first time around.

VERDICT: Jurassic World is the best sequel audiences could have hoped for. The film features a finely-tuned mix of nostalgic references to the original movie with its own inventive new set pieces, ignoring the second and third entries in the franchise and using the first as its foundation. Overall, Jurassic World comes very close to the greatness of the first film.
