Local resident and chairperson of the Welview Resident’s Association, Annie Pinnock said she recently became a victim of crime.
She alleged that a car guard at Rock Cottage in Weltevreden Park might be involved in car jamming.
“I parked my car outside Checkers at Rock Cottage on 3 June and I went shopping,” explained Pinnock.
“I was carrying a lot of shopping bags, and so a car guard came and started to help me. However, I told him that I was fine and that he shouldn’t help me. But he kept insisting on carrying my plastic bags.”
Pinnock said when she got to her car she noticed that it was open.
“I was really annoyed, and confused at the same time because I remember locking my car.”
She then went home and while unpacking, she noticed that her laptop bag and other belongings were missing.
“My laptop bag was gone, my camera, [and] back-up hard drive was also missing – my husband and I then went back to talk to the car guards and security,” chairperson explained.
She stated that she recalls locking her car, before she went shopping.
“I am mad at the fact that at the end of the day, I try to support them [car guards], only to become a victim of a crime,” she said.
Pinnock said she opened a case of theft out of a motor vehicle.
Spokesperson for Honeydew Police, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed that a case was opened.
“We are currently experiencing an increase in theft out of motor vehicles in Honeydew Police Precinct,” said WO Jacobs.
“Residents are again warned that before leaving their vehicle, they should ensure that the vehicle is properly locked. When using a remote locking device stand next to your vehicle and make sure that the vehicle has indeed locked,” WO Jacobs advised.
She profusely added that drivers should not leave any property inside their vehicles. “Do not leave your laptop, cellphone, handbag or any other property in the boot of the vehicle when parking the vehicle, take it with you at all times. Also remove your Garmin device when parking your vehicle,” she concluded.
Questions were sent to Rock Cottage management, and comment is awaited.
