GALLERY: Animals make a difference

RADIOKOP – Dios Los Ninos School makes use of ainmals on their premises to help their pupils learn and socialise.

Dios Los Ninos School have proudly made use of various animals in their day-to-day educational activities with their pupils.

This school in Radiokop caters mainly for pupils with special needs and the use of domesticated animals has provided the pupils with the opportunity to learn in a calm and relaxed manner.

Principal at the school Leonie De Kock was very happy with the way in which the animals were being utilised. ”We have been making use of animals for the last eight years now, starting with the dogs from a very young age. I have always believed in animal interaction as a positive method of teaching,” she said.

She explained that the school has introduced these animals from a young age. “Megan, the golden Labrador and Tesco, the golden retriever grew up here, they were introduced from as young as six weeks already. It makes it easier for the dogs and pupils to bond from the very begining.”

De Kock has also revealed that the school makes use of rabbits as well with some extra additions on their way. “The rabbits have been here around three months now. We will be adding guinea pigs and chinchillas to the school soon,” she said.

She pointed out that that the school has noticed how their pupils have interacted with the animals in such an amazing way. “The school has found that the dogs have an exceptional relationship with our pupils. They are very sensitive toward the pupils’ feelings and ways of doing things. The pupils love the fact that they can interact with the animals on a daily basis which has allowed them to learn better,” she concluded.
