Growing love in Ruimsig

RUIMSIG – Mothers and family members suffering from the effects of postnatal depression can join a new support group.

A free postnatal depression (PND) support group has opened in Ruimsig. Postnatal depression is a depressive illness that affects new mothers and usually develops within the first month following childbirth. Psychiatrist, Dr Dora Wynchank says, “We do not know the exact cause of PND, but it is likely that a number of factors are involved.” PND may be triggered by the hormonal changes following childbirth, as well as by the stresses and lifestyle changes involved in looking after a new baby – body changes, role changes and sleep deprivation can all bring on the illness.

“PND is more common in mothers who’ve previously had episodes of depression. A family history of depression also increases the risk,” adds Dr Wynchank. The new Honeydew Postnatal Depression Support Group offers women experiencing PND a warm, caring and understanding environment. This free group is hosting its first meeting on 20 June from 9am to 10.30am in Ruimsig. The group will be facilitated by mental health worker, Post Natal Depression Support Association South Africa committee member and mother Meryl Da Costa and psychologist and family expert Candice Cowen.

“Many mothers do not know that there is support and help for them. Many suffer in silence and in fear of being judged, discriminated or viewed as a bad mother,” says Da Costa. “I have suffered from postnatal depression. I know what it is like and how important it is to have support.” The group will be open to all who are suffering from PND, including fathers and other family members who need additional support, encouragement and help through this difficult adjustment. To attend the free support group, email Da Costa at meryl.x@hotmail.com or phone her on 082 978 3510.
