Manhole covers are being replaced with plastic
The Municiplaity plans to replace the manhole covers with plastic covers in order to alleviate the crime it attracts.

The new plastic covers are of good quality according to the standards of the SABS (South African Bereau of Standards) and the JRA (Johannesburg Roads Agency), says JRA spokesperson, Bertha Peter-Scheepers.
The plastic covers are made up of a mixture of different materials and they have proven to be working correctly and sufficently.
“It has undergone testing to ensure that it is durable and robust,” she added.
The plastic covers has a long life-span and can be used for many years as they vary according to the vehicles. There are plastic covers which are made especially for trucks to drive over, as well as cars which makes it strong to withstand any form of heavy weight.
According to Scheepers, “the new project has cost the JRA more money, however, it is definitely worth it if it reduces the criminal rate.”
An article on the City of Johannesburg’s website said that the JRA (Johannesburg Road Agency) was forced to replace the damage of 3200 manholes in the year 2013-2014 which cost R2.9 million.
