MTN strike enters third week

The MTN strike regarding bonus payments is entering it's third week.

MTN workers took their protests to the next level as they burned tyres outside the gates of the Innovation Centre on Friday.

Police and Johannesburg Metro Police Department officials who were stationed at the scene allegedly shot teargas and rubber bullets at the striking workers, which sparked the incident.

The strike, which is now entering its third week, is due to disputes over bonus payments.

The demands by workers include 16% for bonuses, a 10% salary increase and the conversion of non-permanent workers to permanent positions.

However, MTN is offering an eight percent guaranteed bonus, which will be payable in two instalments.

The first payment was made in March this year, and the second instalment will be payable in December.

A task team has been established to look into payment for work done on Sundays and public holidays, in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
