Take bullying head on
JOBURG — As Child Protection Week continues, we look at the deadly effects of bullying.
As we mark Child Protection Week on 27 May to 2 June, we look at the effects of bullying, including the psychological and emotional scars that its victims endure.
A 2013 study by consumer insights company, Pondering Panda found that 36 per cent of the respondents described bullying as the biggest problem in South African schools, compared to 28 per cent in the previous year.
“We interviewed teachers, family and pupils between 13 and 34 years old and found that both genders were equally affected by bullying. Forty per cent of 13- and 14-year-olds identified bullying as a major problem, compared to a lesser figure in 15- and 17-year-olds,” said the company’s spokesperson, Johan van der Merwe.
Subsequently, reports of pupils being abused and mistreated by teachers have also been making headlines. More recently, a 68-year-old principal at a Joburg crèche appeared in court after allegedly telling two young children to have sex and filmed the act.
As bullying often occurs in the school environment – schools should become active participants in rooting out bullying and work alongside parents and guardians to ensure the dignity of every child.
Melina Georgiou, an educational psychologist from Akeso Crescent Clinic in Bromhof said the effects of bullying often transcend into adulthood.
“The effects of bullying can also be severe, leading to possible mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and even suicide. Causes of bullying can include neglect, lack of consistent involvement or nurture from parents, harsh physical discipline and violence.”
