Knit-along on Museum Day

Young and old were given a free tour of the museum's exhibitions.

Roodepoort Museum celebrated International Museum Day by opening it’s doors to the public.

From information panels illustrating the history of Roodepoort to the reconstructed 19th century farmyard where you experience what life was like before the discovery of gold. However, this was not the only event the museum had on offer. A “knit-a-long” for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela took place.

Residents across Roodepoort stopped by with bags full of blankets to donate while more came in with their knitting accessories prepared for a full day of knitting.

67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, a registered non-profit organization (NGO) is a movement where people get together to knit and crochet blankets for those in need.

Just last month the NGO knitted their way into the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s largest blanket.

The 3 133 meter blanket was displayed at the Union Bulding in Pretoria.

“I’ve knitted and sowed since I was a little girl and I enjoy it very much. We are doing this for a good cause. I meet people from all different walks of life and together we can be creative, knitting warm blankets and clothing for those less fortunate,” said Marise Sowersby.

Head of the Roodepoort Museum Anne Smart said the objective for the day is to raise awareness in the community about the role of the museum.

“This is a way to bring people together to share in our wonderful heritage. The Roodepoort Museum is always involved in community projects such as the 67 Blankets for Mandela and our museum is a drop-off point for those who want to donate their blankets,” she said.

Collected blankets will be distributed on Mandela Day, which occurs annually on 18 July.
