Resident Debbie Thwaites decided to take matters into her own hands when she organised with two men to clean up the rubbish on the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and John Vorster Road.
Thwaites said, “This road is in a total mess and I think it was time that someone did something, as the City stopped caring about cleaning up on this corner months ago.” She added that the rubbish was strewn on the pavement and Pikitup never cleans up there. “The City does send around people who pick up rubbish from time to time but it has been a while since they sent someone.” She added that the workers made good work of cleaning up the area and they filled bags with rubbish and they removed bamboo that was growing in one of the corners.

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin feels the correct process was not followed as he didn’t receive any reference numbers from the residents about the complaints that they lodged with the City regarding the rubbish. “If I had received the reference numbers then I could have followed up on the issues but I have to thank the residents for taking the initiative to clean up this area as it has been in a state of disarray for months.”
Thwaites concluded, “The City now needs to remove the illegal traders and beggars from this corner as I feel the issues arise because they leave rubbish behind,”
