Maragon celebrates Ascension Day

RUIMSIG — The story of Narnia is used to explain the ascension of Jesus to heaven.

The pupils at Maragon’s Primary school took some time out to celebrate Asscension Day in its grand hall on 14 May.

Educator Harry Bateman started by giving a brief history of the day, relating the story of Jesus’ ascension to the movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion,The Witch and The Wardrobe.

“We can compare Aslan to Jesus Christ. When Aslan greets the children, he says they are the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, which we all know from the Bible. There is a great correlation between the story of Jesus’ crucifixion and ascension and that of Aslan.”

The Grade 4–7 pupils enjoyed the comparisons between the stories and three clips shown from the movie. Bateman said even though the disciplines were sad that Jesus was gone, the angels reminded them that he would be back again.

“Aslan rose from the dead and he came back triumphant. In death, your physical body may be gone but your spirit will live on forever.” Bateman continued, “If you believe in Jesus Christ, you will have eternal life.”

The pupils were encouraged to write beautiful messages related to Ascension Day the day before and Bateman said they should leave one in a stranger’s post box, to brighten their day.

“God is good and the scriptures tell us that God is good. Jesus will be back,” he concluded.
