19-year-old blazing to stardom
ALLENS NEK — Get the latest scoop from the newly crowned Mr Junior SA.
It is no secret that many people long to be in the spotlight or on the cover of magazines. For young Sasha Robertson, the dream of stardom came to him accidentally while at the grocery store.
The 19-year-old Allens Nek resident said he was at a grocery store with his mother when he was approached by an agent with a life-changing proposal.
He says, “It wasn’t really something that I had ever considered but an agent approached me… and asked me if I had ever thought about being a model and I just took a go at it.”
Robertson’s first modelling opportunity came when he took part in a ‘face’ competition when he was only in grade 10. He has since been named as the Face of Clearwater Mall and was recently crowned Mr Junior South Africa – not bad for someone who has just completed his Grade 12 studies.
“I love the fact that I have met so many different people since I began modelling. I have been invited to audition at The Arts competition in the US in a few months,” he adds.
Robertson appeared in numerous TV, billboard and magazine adverts – you might now see him in TV adverts for Old Mutual and Coca-Cola.
It certainly seems as if Robertson is living every teenager’s dream but he says the industry comes with its own negative backlash. “There is always social pressure. People have assumed that I have a big head and some have asked if I am gay. Besides all of that though, it is nothing I can’t handle,” he says.
According to Sasha, after entering the International Talent Showcase (ITS) in October last year, he was scouted and has been invited to go compete in New York. As a result, his university plans have been put on hold while he raises funds for the trip to New York in June.
