HONEYDEW – Honeydew Bowling Club hosts a fun day to raise funds for literacy.
A family and friends fun day was hosted by the Honeydew Bowling Club on 1 May. The main order of the day was fun – with lawn bowling, and then later in the evening, it was dining with loved ones. This was done to raise funds for the Help2read organisation based in Oerder Park. “Half of the funds that are made will be given to the Help2read organisation. The club is always big on helping out charities; it is a good thing to do,” said club president Dave Chantry.
Chantry explained that fun days are a great way to reach out to the community and get them to help out while pursuing a relaxing hobby.
Help2read is a developmental organisation that addresses child literacy by providing supplementary English literacy tutoring in under-resourced public schools. Employment is created by recruiting literate and unemployed adults to become tutors. Volunteers are also welcomed to help with this tutoring programme.
“We have partnered with the Honeydew Sports Club to try and raise funds to maintain our organisation, [and] expand it to across Johannesburg. If other sports clubs could also assist us by helping to raise funds through fun days it will be highly appreciated,” said Help2read business development associate Renias Muwando.
First time bowlers Tshepo Mosito and Kevin in’t Veld described lawn bowling as an uplifting, fun, relaxing, and a different experience. “Knowing that it is to help out a cause is really a good feeling,” said Mosito. “I will definitely do something like this again.”
Eileen Livesey said, “I invited people and they came from all over just to be here. It is a wonderful way to give back to charity while having fun.”
