Update: Community reels from shock after shooting

Other residents and family have expressed their shock, dismay and anger on Facebook.

The Witpoortjie community, family, friends and neighbours are in shock after a resident, an ex-policeman, was brutally murdered this past Friday night.

The victim, whose name is known to the Record, was shot at 15 times in a drive-by style shooting.

René Grabie wrote “with all the hijackings and shooting and murders that I have been reading about that are happening in Roodepoort I am happy that I moved away six months ago to an area that has an extremely low crime rate” while Carilyn Potgieter said it was “heart breaking. He leaves behind a wife and two young boys.”

Someone else, MaOnkgopotse Motheo, claiming to be a family member, expressed his sadness saying “that is my cousin brother, he was a cop we, all are all from Kimberley, sad and crying.” In a different post he said “we just left his house now, they will burn in hell who did this.”

Carilyn Potgieter wrote “we know him as humble, respectful, always smiling .”

According to Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Nonhlanhla Kumhalo there is currently no new information but it is believed detectives will obtain footage from a CCTV camera mounted on a neighbour’s wall.

A friend of the family said funeral arrangements will only be made today.
