The Editor’s column on 7 April, ‘Crime is getting worse’ struck a raw nerve within me. On 27 March my beloved younger brother Michael was murdered in Johannesburg’s CBD. Mixed feelings of grief, anger, rage and helplessness have assailed me since that tragic day. Why, why, why my brother? He was a gentle soul who was a hero and role model father and husband to so many.

How did our beautiful country reach the stage where 47 families per day are overcome with grief due to the murder of a loved one?

I refuse to allow my brother to become just another statistic in South Africa. This cancer of crime will be removed from our society when enough good people demand that it happen. Let’s start a movement to reject crime. I for one will relish the next time somebody asks me for a bribe so that I can tell them exactly where to go.

I am seething with anger. #OurChildrenDeserveBetter.
