All we want is love

Animals at the Roodepoort SPCA looking for a forever home.

Since the Krugersdorp SPCA closed its doors, the Roodepoort branch is feeling the pinch.

According to manager Mandy Cavanaugh, except for the Randburg SPCA, Roodepoort is not only one of the oldest branches in the country, but it is the closest branch that services the area.

“It’s been tough since we are taking in more animals than before. People would drive from Krugersdorp to bring in animals,” Mandy said. She added there are still people who bring in animals who claim they are strays. “It is clear that the animals are house trained and well kept.”

She said the SPCA tries to keep an animal as long as possible and would only euthanase if the animal is experiencing kennel stress, have an illness that can affect the other inmates or are beyond medical treatment.

“Although we take good care of the dogs and cats, for them it feels like jail because they are in a sense isolated from each other. They would love nothing more than to be adopted in a for ever home,” Mandy said.

The SPCA appeals to the community to assist them with dog and cat food as well as blankets. “The winter is around the corner and we don’t want the animals to suffer. I would like to give each dog and cat a extra blanket to fight the winter chills.”
