HONEYDEW – Meet legend Benedict Vilakazi soccer coach and industry favourite.

Former Bafana Bafana player Benedict Vilakazi (33) is imparting his skills at Education Through Soccer Academy (ETSA) as a coach. See a previous article on ETSA.

Vilakazi played for the famous local South African soccer team Orlando Pirates, and in his long journey through soccer, he also played for Mamelodi Sundowns.

He has played soccer for about 16 years and said, “We need football to grow in South Africa.”

According to Vilakazi, between three to four years at the end of your career is a great time to retire.

He now coaches at ETSA where he wishes to start a new journey in soccer.

“Boys don’t have the same type of passion [for soccer] like they used to. I am using this opportunity to build new players.”

When asked at what age a person should start playing soccer seriously Vilakazi profoundly replied, “If you don’t give good medicine to children when they are young, they can’t win when they are old either.”

At ETSA, he said, they pride themselves in preparing these boys from a young age.

“I coach the boys here to grow. They grow and, in doing so, take another step forward in learning how to focus and improve.”
