We achieved our goal

The ideology behind the concept of the Florida Mardi Gras was to provide an opportunity to raise awareness of this wonderful resource that is Florida Lake; to highlight the problems surrounding the lake precinct; to enhance awareness of the activities that take place around this body of water and lastly, but not least, to celebrate 90 years of the Florida Swimming Club, whose birth place was indeed the waters of Florida Lake.

However, that is another very interesting story, for another time. Coincidently, the date we had selected, coincided with the celebration of the Chinese New Year at the Dragon Boat Club and we saw this as a great opportunity to incorporate this celebration into our auspicious day. To enhance awareness of the activities that take place around this body of water.

So, imagine my over whelming surprise (and other soppy emotions) when I discovered that “Post Mardi Gras, – Beulah Cloete and her daughter Lee-Anne, from the Dragon Boat Club offered their services to the – Westview Clinic residents.

Lee-anne teaches ballroom dancing lessons at the Clinic once a week; yesterday afternoon I took myself up the road to the Clinic to check this out and take some pics. What fun this was, they were being taught the samba. Sadly, being a tad self conscious, I was reluctant to take part, but did so enjoy the laughter and the camaraderie. Next week, I will give it a go!!

Today, I took myself down to the Lake to take some pics of this wonderful group of people take to the water under the guidance of Lee-anne and Wouter on a Dragon Boat. There they went…..one, two, three, four. When I left they were happily paddling along the north side of the Lake.

I do understand that there is also a collaboration between the Girl Guides and the Canoe Club, but to date have not had confirmation of this.

And so, we as On Florida feel that this is a job “well done”. We have achieved our goal.
