Eyewitness account: Metro Police did not stop to help, says passenger

Passengers tried repeatedly to phone police.

One of the almost 70 passengers on the Metrobus involved in the shooting this morning gave a disturbing account of what took place.

Peter Moodley and his wife boarded the bus they take everyday and as is their habit went and sat in the top deck. When they reached the bus stop in question they heard the ‘passengers’ get on and then the sound of someone falling. When the people started screaming they first thought a passenger fell off the bus but then the first shot rang out which injured the driver.

According to Moodley three to four more shots were fired.

“Shouts of ‘get down, get down’ rang out and we also got down. The next moment we saw the men running from the bus. Although the shooting and the robbing only took about a minute, it felt like a life time,” Moodley told the Record.

When the passengers gathered outside, Moodley gave his jacket to wipe the blood off the driver and to try and cover him until help came.

Moodley says various passengers tried to call the police but could not get through. Moodley also risked his life by running into the road to try and flag down a Metro Police vehicle who refused to stop. When he left the scene after 40 minutes there were still no law enforcement on the scene. He spoke highly of the emergency services saying they came within minutes.

Moodley said he and his wife are severely traumatised.

“It is not safe anymore. Where is this country going to?” asked Moodley.

Moodley said he has no choice but to continue taking the Metrobus but said he hoped a security guard would be posted on the early morning busses or that a second vehicle would follow these busses.

This was the third similar attack on a Metrobus in the past year.

Metrobus could not be reached for comment.
