Quilting their way to Guinness World Record
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Women have come together to quilt for charity in an attempt to enter a Guiness World Record.
Part-Time Quilters and friends celebrated National Quilt Day on 21 March by getting together to make quilts for charity.
Weltevreden Chapel kindly allowed these women to use their hall to do their quilting and patchwork.
According to Sheila van Dyk of Part-Time Quilters, this group of women meet monthly to share enthusiasm and skills in patchwork and quilting.
“With the occasional bit of embroidery, knitting and fabric paint thrown into the mix. PTQ caters to working women, so we meet on a Saturday, for talks, workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and inspiration.”
They are based around Johannesburg’s western suburbs and affiliated to Golden Rand Guild for Quilters.
Van Dyk added, “We limit our numbers to stay sociable, so there is a waiting list to join.”
She said she has entered in an attempt to break the current Guiness World Record for the biggest quilt.
“In order to do that, we need around 11 000 single bed quilts. These will all be joined together to form one long quilt. Eighteen women gave up three hours of their time and they have completed 28 quilt tops.At this stage, they have just over 2 000 tops and would welcome any help to achieve the goal.”
“The community can help in ways of spreading the word, sewing tops or donating any unwanted material or batting,” Van Dyk said.
She added that in future they will try and host these meetings every second Saturday of the month from 9am till 12.30pm.
