Sentences secured by Honeydew Detectives

HONEYDEW – Long hours of investigations by Honeydew Police Detectives put criminals behind bars.

Honeydew Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs shared the recent successes achieved by their detectives. According to WO Jacobs, four of their detectives secured good sentences in some of the cases that they were working on.

Sergeant Livhuwani Ramathavahana from the Honeydew Cluster Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit secured a sentence in the Palm Ridge High Court.

A 29-year-old suspect was sentenced to an effective 40 years in prison after being found guilty on six charges of rape. According to WO Jacobs, the suspect targeted women who were waiting for a taxi in the evenings. “He would pretend to also be waiting for a taxi and would then point a firearm at the women and instruct them to go with him into a nearby bush where he would rape them and also rob them of their belongings,” explained WO Jacobs. It is said that the youngest female victim was 14.

Another detective from the station, Constable Llewelyn Zitha secured a sentence at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.

According to WO Jacobs, in 2014 a family was watching TV when suspects entered their townhouse. The family was held up and the suspects fled the scene with various household items and electronics.

The suspects were arrested and found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

They were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Constable Godfrey Maphota secured a sentence at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. According to WO Jacobs, Constable Maphota was the investigating officer in a fraud case that started in 2013 where a female suspect, aged 23, fraudulently took out personal loans on other people’s identification. It is said that the suspect would use the person’s ID details and then place her own photo in the ID document handed in at the banks. She also falsified payslips. At the time of her arrest, she had taken loans out to the value of approximately R500 000. She was sentenced to effectively six years’ imprisonment.

Constable Godfrey Mabasa secured a sentence at the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court after investigating a housebreaking and robbery incident that took place in Weltevreden Park last year. A domestic worker was attacked while busy with her daily duties. The suspect was found guilty on a charge of armed robbery and sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment.
