Taxi violence brings Ontdekkers to a halt

A fight between taxi drivers at the illegal rank on the corner of Crane Street and Ontdekkers Road, led to two people injured.

A fight erupted at approximately 11.50am at the rank. Shortly afterwards a white Toyota drove by and shots were exchanged. An unmarked police car pursued the Toyota but lost it after another car blocked the police vehicle’s way by accident.

According to Colonel André Laing of Roodepoort police, the mob then chased two of the rival taxi drivers and caught up with them on the middle man of Ontdekkers Road. One of the fleeing drivers was shot in the foot while a second was severely assaulted with what bystanders say was concrete hammer.

Ontdekkers Road is severely congested and motorists are advised to take alternative routes.
