Roodepoort Rugby Club beat the Harlequins

The Roodepoort Rugby Club started the Assupol series on a high as they won their their first away game against the Harlequins last weekend.

The team beat the Harlequins 31-26, scoring five tries in the match. Head coach Brian Armitage was pleased with the results and how the team played on the day.

“The tries we scored were well constructed and had we been able to control the breakdown a little better. We feel we could have scored a few more.  Our general play was of a very high standard for our first game but we have identified some key areas that we need to work on this coming week,” said Armaitage.

The coach also identified match fitness as a key area as the last 15 minutes proved costly for the team.

“This will improve from game to game. The teams commitment on defence was very encouraging and was certainly the difference between the two teams,” he said.

The coach handed out debut’s to Eric Botes and Jos Stander who equipped themselves well on the field but highlighted Jesse Geyers and Byron Godfrey as the standout players from the game.

“These players were amazing the entire match but the man of the match is Dewet Steyn who was outstanding on defence and whose work rate was absolutely Trojan,” said Armitage.

Team results:
First team won 31-26 (Steven Griffiths (1try); Byron Godfrey (1 Try); Adriaan Jacobs (1 Try); Chanley Williams (1 Try); Hennie Oosthuizen (1 Try; 3 Conversions)
