Police made a gruesome discovery on Thursday afternoon after a tip-off from the community.
Colonel André Laing of the Roodepoort police and seven of his colleagues were told a corpse were lying in a shack in Dunusa. After forcing the door open of the said shack the corpse of a Sotho illegal miner (zama-zama) was discovered. It is alleged that he was bludgeoned to death with a knobkierie. The community then told the police that a mob of about 50 Sotho zama-zama’s from a rival faction were on their way to Sol Plaatjies. The police pursued the mob in an attempt to stop them but they escaped. On arrival the community told the police they saw a fight on the other side of a stream running past the settlement.
The police formed a line and combed the area. They discovered a second corpse also beaten with a knobkierie and with various stab wounds.
No arrests have been made.
