Suspects speed past traffic in car chase
HONEYDEW — Two suspects get caught after a high speed chase from Honeydew to the south of Joburg.
Two suspects were arrested in the southern suburbs of Joburg after a high speed chase between them and private security company, SOS Protect Sure.
On 30 January, the company’s operations’ manager, Richard Saville was informed of a stolen vehicle travelling toward Beyers Naudé drive. A white Honda had just been stolen by suspects travelling in a red Polo.
“I drove down Beyers Naudé and found the vehicles at the intersection of Jim Fouché where the white Honda was parked next to the red Polo and the drivers seemed to be talking to each other. As soon as the robot changed to green, the Honda joined traffic in front of the red Polo.”
Suspecting they were the vehicles he was informed about, Saville followed them both as they joined the N1 South toward Soweto. The Honda slowly pulled away from the Polo and Saville persisted behind the Polo.
“The red Polo moved into the fast lane and continued down the N1 South, when the Polo got to the Maraisburg off-ramp, he swerved violently from the fast lane and took the off-ramp at the very last moment,” Saville continued.
The high-speed chase went through Bosmont, Industria-West, Lanlaagte and Riverlea, speeding past red robots and driving toward oncoming traffic before the suspected car collided with a Toyota Yaris.
“The suspects fled on foot and jumped into the parking lot of the Sun 1 Hotel. I drove around the corner to the entrance and noticed one of the suspects running from the hotel down the road. The second suspect was in a housing complex next to the hotel,” said Richard Saville.
When police officials arrived, valuables, including a flat screen TV, X-box, jewellery and other valuables were found in the vehicle. It is believed the men had broken into at least two houses in the Honeydew area.
Police are investigating a possible link to other burglaries in the area over the past month.
