Perfect day for cycling in Berge en Dale Classic

ROODEPOORT – The number of cyclists surprises race organisers as 20 per cent more cyclists took part in this year's Berge en Dale Classic.

The Berge en Dale Classic took place on 31 January with the starting point at Cradlestone Mall. The 102 km cycle route had some of South Africa’s best cyclists and everyday cyclists who rode in the classic to obtain a seeding time for the Cape Town Cycle Tour that will take place on 8 March.

The circular route started off at Cradlestone and cyclists made their way through Magaliesburg and Krugersdorp followed by Maropeng and back to the mall via Beyers Naudé Drive.

The top three male professional cyclists who took first, second and third were Metkel Eyon, Stefan de Bod and Willie Smit with Eyob finishing the race in an astonishing time of 02:25:00.

The top three ladies were Lise Olivier, Carla Oberholzer and Kim le Court de Billot. Olivier finished the race in 02:46:00.

Race organiser Darren Herbst was surprised by the number of cyclists that took place in the classic the year. “The riders came out in numbers and the spectators made the day even more enjoyable and the sunny weather was the cherry on top.

“This year we saw a 20 per cent increase in riders and the race is an established race as it has been going for 15 years. I want to thank the sponsors because without them the event would not have been possible,” concluded Herbst.
