Drunk driving accident claims two lives
RUIMSIG – Alleged drunk driver crashes into another vehicle, claiming lives of two occupants of that vehicle.
Two elderly women lost their lives this morning, Friday 30 January when a car they were travelling in collided head on with another car. The surviving occupant, who was the driver, sustained serious injuries and is in a critical condition at Flora Clinic.
According to Metro Police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, the driver of a silver Honda was trying to avoid a roadblock that Metro Police had set up on Hendrik Potgieter Road. “He made a U-turn and drove facing the oncoming traffic. That is when he collided with the other vehicle,” explained Mamonyane.
The driver was allegedly drunk and was found to be over the limit when he was breathalysed. He is now being detained at Honeydew Police Station and will be charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and drunken driving.
He sustained no injuries.One of the tow-truck drivers said the alleged driver showed no remorse after the accident. He will appear in the Roodeport Magistrates’ Court soon.
