Cable theft causes blackout

RADIOKOP – Cable thieves who tried to steal cables took out two substations when both supposedly exploded following the theft.

A substation on the corner of Erasmus and Opera roads cut out at around 12.45pm on 11 January and left residents without power for a couple of hours.

Resident Hilary White said, “We heard a loud explosion and the power went off immediately.”She added that everything was quiet until a fire engine arrived at 14.30pm.

Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht explained the substation failed because of attempted cable theft. “Two stations in Roodepoort were affected by this and repairs have been made to the substation in Radiokop. The power went off at 1pm and it came on at 5pm. I reckon it’s worth a well done to City Power,” added White.
