Robot out for a count

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Roads Agency says that driver will have to pay for the traffic light that was knocked down on 30 December.

As it lies on the ground, still alive as the colours change from red to green, it begs for the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to come and save it.

This dreadful intro explains what is currently happening on the corner of Christiaan de Wet and John Vorster roads after a traffic light was knocked down by a motorist on 30 December.

According to Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin, the traffic light has been laying on the pavement for almost two weeks after it was knocked down.

“This is a hazard as wires are exposed and it makes this corner look like a total mess,” the councillor added and asked why JRA hasn’t repaired or replaced the traffic light yet.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers explained that the replacement of the pole is on the entity’s schedule list. “We are currently prioritising signal pole replacements where traffic signals are non-functional, however, at this intersection the signal is working and is safe.”

She explained that the driver who crashed into the traffic light will have to pay up.

“We have approximately 70 such instances per month where we have the responsible driver’s details or vehicle registration number. We supply this on our claim form to the City’s insurance company and they will then claim back from this person,” concluded Peters-Scheepers.
