Smart meters for Ward 97

ROODEPOORT – New smart meters will be installed in Ward 97 soon says councillor Jaco Engelbrecht.

Residents in Ward 97 will be glad to hear that they are next in line to receive smart meters from City Power, said councillor Jaco Engelbrecht.

“Ruimsig will be the first suburb in Ward 97 that will receive smart meters, followed by Eagle Canyon.”

Engelbrecht explained that this is all part of Executive Mayor for Johannesburg Parks Tau’s ‘Smart City’ initiative which was announced at the previous State of the City address. “The idea behind smart meters, is that they remove the need for costly and often ineffective and inaccurate meter reading. The meter can be read remotely and the resident is provided with a unit that is inside the house and shows the resident the reading of the meter that is outside and covered. This allows for transparency of the process.”

He added that residents in these areas can expect the technicians to come and install the smart meters any day now.

“If residents doubt whether the technicians work for City Power or one of their contractors, they can call the City Power call-centre on 087 022 0540 and confirm the ID/staff numbers before letting them enter their properties,” concluded Engelbrecht.
