Police aware of Gordon Road issues

ROODEPOORT – According to the police only five smash and grab incidents have been reported from July till November on Gordon Road.

Gordon Road close to the N1 off ramp is renowned to be a smash and grab hotspot.

The same area was in the news a while ago when a motorists caught a glimpse of a suspected smash and grabber but resident Lizelle Pieterse explained that the police need to launch a task force to deal with the increasing levels of crime in the area.

“On the 15th of November at around 5pm, we were standing at the robot on the same area that has been in the news so often in the last couple of weeks,” said Pieterse. “While we were stationary about three men approached a Hyundai SUV and they broke the window of the car took what they wanted and jumped over a barrier and ran to the top of the embankment.”

Pieterse added that these criminals stood on top of the embankment and they just kept on standing there without fear of anyone going after them. “They have no fear and sadly no one stopped to assist the lady because at this stage, I think people are too scared to help as they don’t know if these thugs are armed.”

She added, “Its fine for the police to send out their tips to reduce smash and grabs but why don’t they put their vehicles there to monitor the area?”

Florida Police spokesperson Captain Lydia Mtila Dikolomela mentioned that the police are aware of the problems in this area. “So far from July, we have had five smash and grab incidents that were reported to the police. We have noted the concerns of the residents and we are working on a strategy to lower smash and grabs close to the N1 off ramp and on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Gordon roads.”
