Taxi skips red traffic light and collides with two vehicles

ALLEN'S NEK – Three injured after a taxi rolled and collided with two other vehicles.

Peak hour traffic came to a halt when a taxi and two other vehicles were involved in a collision on the corner of Rinyani Avenue and Christiaan de Wet Road.

Thabiso Mononela, one of the vehicle drivers that were involved in the accident, said he was transporting children to Charterhouse Primary School, not far from the accident scene.

Mononela stated that a taxi came speeding from Christiaan de Wet (from Honeydew) and skipped a red traffic light.

“I was travelling from Rinyani and about to drive across Christiaan de Wet Road when this taxi smashed into one of the vehicles that was in front of my vehicle.”

After colliding with the vehicle, the taxi rolled and crashed into Mononela’s vehicle.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the police are still investigating the cause of the accident. Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi explained that they also didn’t know how the accident happened.

“The only details we currently have is that two of the people who were injured during the accident have been transported to the Helen Joseph Hospital where they will receive further medical care, although their injuries are only minor,” added Mulaudzi. “The fourth patient refused ambulance transportation to hospital with another service.”

Koni Seoposengwe, the owner of the vehicle that was transporting the school children, alleged that she suffered intimidation and threats from the other taxi drivers who were at the scene. “I was only asking them to give me the taxi owner’s contact details because I wanted to talk to him about what happened.”

An Allen’s Nek resident, who witnessed the collision, mentioned that this was the second accident in one week on the same street. “On Monday, three vehicles were in an accident right here on Rinyani Avenue. Some of these accidents can easily be avoided if motorists could give each other way.”

Dobsonville Roodepoort Leratong Johannesburg Taxi Association (Dorljota), which is an association that the taxi is affiliated to, is still to give comment on the matter.
