Resident disheartened about road
CONSTANTIA KLOOF – JRA is unable to install traffic calming measures due to the gradient of Golf Club Terrace.
Ernest Ayres moved into the suburb recently, his house is located next to a street called Golf Club Terrace and he said that it’s been a nightmare from the start.
“Speeding is my first gripe with the road – the motorists use it as a race track, exceeding the speed limit especially during the nights and at peak hour traffic. A couple of weeks ago a speeding motorist misjudged the corner, took out a light pole and drove straight through someone’s wall.”
Ayres added that driving out of his driveway is almost impossible as motorists don’t slack down to give him a chance to exit his property. “They have the audacity to hoot when I turn into the road or when I slow down to turn into my driveway.”
He said that taxis use the pavements on both sides of the road to pick up and drop off their passengers. “These taxis hoot whenever they stop and the noise never stops. The council should consider installing speed bumps to slow down the traffic – especially before the blind corners. This should make our suburb a safer one and prevent any serious accidents from occurring on this busy road.”
Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “The issue of traffic calming measures on Golf Club Terrace have been investigated by the JRA and due to the gradient of the road as well as the class of road (higher order mobility road) traffic calming measures can’t be accommodated.”
She added that all of the issues appear to fall under a traffic law enforcement nature that is the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) responsibility.
JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minaar added, “We will need to launch a proper investigation into the area to see for ourselves what the complaints are, but we will revert to the public with more info about our plan of action going forward.”
