I want to spend Christmas with you
This time of the year is all about love and family and pets need it too. Pets are available for adoption at the Roodepoort SPCA
Christmas is just around the corner and no animal wants to be alone during this festive time of the year. Getting a pet could be a joyous occasion for both family and pet. The kennels at the Roodepoort’s SPCA have stray or abandoned pets just waiting for a new home and family to love.
To adopt a pet, all a person needs to do is to visit the kennels and choose a pet. Then an application form is filled by the prospective owner along with a valid South African ID or driving license, which costs R100. SPCA inspectors are sent to an applicant’s home to make certain that it is suitable for the animal they want to take home.
If a prospective owner lives in a complex, they must provide a letter from the corporate board. Inspectors will inspect the yard for space, check if there is shelter, food and water available for the pet.
If the inspection is successful, the remaining fee is expected to be paid before the pet is turned over. To adopt a dog costs R600, a kitten is R550 and a cat R400. The fee includes sterilisation, first vaccination, rabies vaccination and deworming of the animal, along with a microchip and ID tag.
The SPCA do not allow animals to go to inadequately fenced or walled properties and gates must also be of adequate height and structure to prevent a dog from wandering into the street. Chaining of a dog will immediately disqualify an applicant from adopting a dog.
Trainee Inspector Theo Mahube recommends prospective owners with young children or other pets to come and visit the kennels before deciding on adopting.
“Parents must bring in their young children to see the pet first and judge how they both interact with each other to avoid problems. The same applies to those who already own a dog,” he said.
