Competition develops future master minds

RUIMSIG — Pupils from around the province battle it out with sums and equations in Cami competition

Putting mathematical skills on the forefront of educational development in private and public schools, the Foundation for Excellent Learning hosted the Cami competition on 1 November.

Hosted at the Marist Brothers Linmeyer College, more than 20 schools took part in the Turning Tables competition, including our very own Maragon Private Schools. Maragon reached the third in overall points, beating stiff competition from 24 schools from around the province.

CEO of the Foundation for Excellent Learning Sharon Cross said, “The objective of the competition is to encourage pupils to improve their core mathematics skills. Since January, we have conducted preliminary intra-school competitions at 24 private and public primary schools around Gauteng with the objective of encouraging pupils to practise their core skills in preparation for the Inter School Competition.”

Each school placed a pupil from each grade for the competition. Maragon had six pupils that won the second and third places respectively. Top prizes were awarded for pupils based on the Performance Index (PI), which is based on speed and accuracy and the number of correct sums completed per minute.

Grade 6 pupil Tamuka Chakaipa won the silver medal and received a PI score of 63.3. Winners of the foundation and intermediate phase each won a Cami maths learning system equipped with the mathematics curriculi from grade 1 to 12.

Cross added “It is crucial that at an early age pupils realise that maths is an extremely important subject. Without a strong foundation, pupils will find it difficult to achieve good marks for FET mathematics for matric which is a crucial subject to most degrees and careers.”
