Well, not in Struben’s Valley, Roodepoort. On Saturday evening one of the residents of Struben’s Valley decided to hold a function. The music was so loud that it sounded like it was coming off our own hi-fi at full volume (I am honestly not exaggerating here!). We could not hold a conversation and by 22:00 the music was still blaring super loudly and none of us could go to bed to sleep. One of our family members tried to ask the resident to turn down the volume and was met by aggressive drunk party people who swore at him and threatened him. So we tried to contact the police. The Honeydew station did not answer their phone. We noted that several times someone would pick up and immediately hang up again. The same happened with the 10111 number. So we tried calling several of the sector police numbers, again no response, or voice mails or someone telling us we dialled the wrong number and this is not their problem anyway!
Excuse me?
So although we were trying to get help with a Public Disturbance our police would not answer their phone even if we were trying to report a murder, assault or a rape! Do we honestly live in a lawless banana republic? No wonder crime is rife everywhere!
Shame on the residents who held the function! Next time hire a venue far away from residential houses and make as much of a racket as you please! And if you have a loud party then please turn down the volume by 22:00 latest, some of us want to sleep! Shame on the police – you have made it very clear that you do not care for the very people you swore to serve and protect!
