Rhino walker survives day 1
ROODEPOORT – Myburgh explains that motorists should be more aware of pedestrians.
Rhino walker Francois Myburgh started from Roodepoort at 3am on 4 November. Appearing from the mist on a chilly morning about 5km into his journey, Myburgh explained that he was already starting to fall into a pattern and he felt that he could finish the day a bit earlier.
On his first day, he walked a total of 55 km. “My pace was surprisingly fast as I finished at about 2.30pm – almost an hour faster than before when I did the same route in July.” He added that although he survived the day, he nearly got ran over by two cars in Sandton. “The two vehicles skipped a red light and they nearly hit me.”
He explained that his backpack is still fully loaded with food and equipment and he only stopped once for a short breakfast just before 10am.
“I’m ready for the next part of the route although I noticed a small blister on my left foot when I arrived at my sleep-over spot for the night.”
